John Updike, 1932-2009

This one hurts. He'll be missed. Probably my second-favorite writer after Steinbeck. I've read his novel The Centaur, about a father & son caught in a blizzard, every December since college -- except this year, when I was distracted by Twilight. I hope my missing a year didn't contribute.

John Updike's The Afterlife and Other Stories is the first book you ever gave me. The note you wrote inside of it is dated 2002. I'm guessing it was a Christmas present, but not part of our suite secret Santa, which I believe took place in December 2000.

Hehe. I gave a lot of Updike books for gifts right after I discovered (and was so enchanted by) The Centaur. I'm sure I thought all his books were as sweet and lovely as that one. But as I read more of him I realized how likely it was that I'd given books with the graphic sex scenes that are so typical of him. Probably more than once people have been like, "Why did Ben give me this?!" Oh well, it was with good intentions. ;-)
