I think that's baloney. People have always read books without buying them new -- at libraries. And that never hurt the publishing industry. There's gotta be other reasons publishers are going belly-up.
As an aside, it makes me a little sad (not very sad) that whatever slim chances I had of getting The Cranberry Hush published are increasingly all but nonexistent. What makes me very sad is that literary fiction is the first thing to get the axe while genre stuff rages on.
